esponse to town flood<strong>in</strong>g. Over 100 kilometers <strong>of</strong> level banks were constructed and to date, similar<br />

ra<strong>in</strong>fall events have not resulted <strong>in</strong> severe flood<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> town.<br />

In 1986 drill<strong>in</strong>g was commenced to look at <strong>sal<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> risk <strong>in</strong> the town and catchment. Like the Belka,<br />

watertables are ris<strong>in</strong>g at rates <strong>of</strong> 0.1-0.3 m/yr. However unlike the conclusions <strong>of</strong> Bettenay twenty years<br />

before, research <strong>in</strong> the mid-1980s and 90’s <strong>in</strong>dicates there is a high <strong>sal<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> risk <strong>in</strong> the Merred<strong>in</strong> type<br />

valley, <strong>with</strong> groundwaters now <strong>with</strong><strong>in</strong> 3-5 m <strong>of</strong> the towns CBD.<br />

Sal<strong>in</strong>ity management has <strong>in</strong>cluded a range <strong>of</strong> measures; tree plant<strong>in</strong>g and trial pump<strong>in</strong>g and associated<br />

desal<strong>in</strong>isation and evaporation <strong>of</strong> water is planned. The bus tour will travel through areas <strong>in</strong> town likely<br />

to develop watertables <strong>with</strong><strong>in</strong> the root zone, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the conference venue. The route will allow<br />

discussions <strong>of</strong> the impact <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> agriculture Rural Towns Program, Shire and local<br />

community efforts.<br />

Travell<strong>in</strong>g west, the bus will pass the Merred<strong>in</strong> town dams, revegetation areas where over 33,000 trees<br />

(for wood and water use) were planted <strong>in</strong> 1991, major CBH handl<strong>in</strong>g centre, Dryland Research Institute<br />

and proposed evaporation bas<strong>in</strong>s before return<strong>in</strong>g to Merred<strong>in</strong> for the Civic Reception.<br />

A detailed set <strong>of</strong> notes on the Merred<strong>in</strong> section is available and several Conference papers will refer to<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>sal<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> risk and resource opportunities for the use <strong>of</strong> sal<strong>in</strong>e groundwater (e.g. see Ali and<br />

Coles, George and Coleman, Jones and others). In addition maps <strong>of</strong> the Belka and Merred<strong>in</strong> catchment<br />

will be available at the Conference, show<strong>in</strong>g present <strong>sal<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> and predictions <strong>of</strong> areas <strong>with</strong> a likely<br />

shallow watertable.
