7.2: HYPOTHESIS SET 1: THE ORGANIZATION OF PRODUCTION<br />

7.2.1: Hypothesis 1<br />

This hypothesis st<strong>at</strong>es th<strong>at</strong> the production <strong>of</strong> obsidian and microcrystalline-quartz<br />

goods was limited to a few residential groups during one time period. Of the tested<br />

residential groups, 17 were chosen for this study based on their sp<strong>at</strong>ial organiz<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

d<strong>at</strong>ed ceramics, and artifact content. <strong>The</strong> distributional analysis <strong>of</strong> production debitage<br />

shows th<strong>at</strong> 14 <strong>of</strong> these residential groups produced chipped-stone goods <strong>at</strong> some point in<br />

the history <strong>of</strong> <strong>Piedras</strong> <strong>Negras</strong>. <strong>The</strong> first aspect <strong>of</strong> the test elimin<strong>at</strong>ed household groups as<br />

chipped-stone producers based on st<strong>at</strong>istically significant amounts <strong>of</strong> production debitage<br />

per time period. <strong>The</strong> weighted production values <strong>of</strong> certain kinds <strong>of</strong> production evidence<br />

were added together and averaged per household group, which are referred to by the<br />

oper<strong>at</strong>ion number for the remainder <strong>of</strong> the chapter. <strong>The</strong> second method used to elimin<strong>at</strong>e<br />

a household group as a production locale was to assess the character <strong>of</strong> the production<br />

debitage. Households th<strong>at</strong> did not fe<strong>at</strong>ure the full range <strong>of</strong> production debitage were<br />

marked as nonproducers. I begin by describing the result for microcrystalline-quartz<br />

artifacts and continue with the obsidian artifacts.<br />

7.2.1.1: Distributional d<strong>at</strong>a for microcrystalline-quartz artifacts. Some residential<br />

groups have a longer history <strong>of</strong> production activity than others, and the acropolis is one<br />

such case. <strong>The</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ions from the first sp<strong>at</strong>ial grouping, loc<strong>at</strong>ed on P<strong>at</strong>io 3 and the north<br />

side <strong>of</strong> the acropolis, can be d<strong>at</strong>ed back to Naba phase. <strong>The</strong> acropolis was continuously<br />
