even worse (8.28). As <strong>in</strong> Hawaiian, the similarity metric rates /s/ as more similar<br />

to /h/ than to /k/. In NZ Ma#ori this is a good result, because English words<br />

with /s/ are adapted as /h/; the problem is that /h/ is ranked as only the fourth<br />

most similar phoneme to /s/, beh<strong>in</strong>d /f/, /t/, and /r/.<br />
