Section 2.<br />
Of the Resident Physician and his duties.<br />
Art. 1. The Resident Physician shall have received a<br />
diploma from some respectable medical college—Me shall<br />
reside in the city, and before he enters on tne duties of his<br />
office, shall take an oath to the following effect u Tnat<br />
whatever may be his opinion of theorigin or infectious nature,<br />
of the yellow fever, he will be as vigilant in preventing<br />
its introduction, as if he knew it to be infectiou> and<br />
of foreign origin, and as careful in detecting or removing<br />
the causes which are supposed to produce it in this city,<br />
as if he believed it might originate here, and that he will,<br />
well and faithfully perform the duties of his offic."<br />
Art. 2. It is the duty of the Resident Physician to preside<br />
at every meeting of the board of healui, and use every<br />
exertion in his power for the adoption of such rules and<br />
regulations as may conduce to tne preservation of the<br />
health of the City. To visit all such persons as are reported<br />
by any Physician of the City to be afflicted with<br />
any malignant, infectious or pestilential disease, and all<br />
others, which from any evidence* he may believe to be so<br />
afflicted, and report his opinion of the case to the board.<br />
To visit all vessels at the quarantine ground, on board of<br />
which the health officer may report any case of malignant,<br />
infectious, or pestilential disease, at all times, when in his<br />
opinion, it shall be necessary, or the board of health shall<br />
direct. To visit and inspect every vessel immediaiely<br />
upon their coming to anchor in the bay, which has been<br />
subjected to perform quarantine by the health officer, receive<br />
from the masters the certificates or passports granted<br />
by the health officer at the quarantine ground, and<br />
see that they are in strict conformity with the cleanliness<br />
of the vessel, the number of persons on board, their health,<br />
&c.—Require answers on oath to all questions which he<br />
may think necessary to put, in relation to the health or<br />
cleanliness of the vessel, if he should deem it necessary ;<br />
and report to the board every thing concerning such vessel,<br />
which he may consider it important for them to know.<br />
To visit and inspect, whenever he may think it necessary,<br />
or the board of health direct, from the first day of June to<br />
the last day of October, every vessel in port, and report<br />
their condition.<br />
And it shall be his duty to furnish all persons acting in,<br />
or connected with his department, copies of all ordinances<br />
of the board of health, and such instructions as may<br />
be necessary, for the better executing of tne same.<br />
For the performance of which duties he shall receive<br />
such compensation as the board of health may think right<br />
and proper.
