Appendix B: Glossary of Terms
graphical user interface (GUI) The graphical user interface, or GUI, is a
program interface that uses a number of visual components (such as icons,
pointers, and pull-down menus) to execute commands. Working in a GUI
allows the user to give instructions to the computer without having to learn
a specific command language.
Head revision The head revision is the tip revision on the default branch,
or the trunk, if no default branch is defined.
importing (a project, sandbox, or member) Importing a project, sandbox,
or member registers it with the Integrity Server. Once a project, sandbox, or
member is imported, Source Integrity commands can be performed upon it.
Integrated Development Environment (IDE) An Integrated
Development Environment, or IDE, is a supported development
application, such as Sybase PowerBuilder, that allows you to access
Source Integrity functionality by installing the appropriate extension.
issues Issues track changes in the software development cycle. For
example, your administrator can configure Integrity Manager in a way that
a problem issue may be associated with a solution issue for easy tracking
and monitoring of both issues. Each issue has an audit trail, which may be
used to evaluate internal processes for the effectiveness of the problem
resolution process. In effect, issues track all aspects of any engineering
endeavor.
keyword expansion Keyword expansion is the process of automatically
adding or updating information to a keyword reference when a revision is
checked out or viewed.
keyword A keyword is a placeholder that can be inserted into text-based
working files. This placeholder is a special variable (for example, $Date$,
$Author$, $State$) used to represent textual information in a working
file. Keywords can be expanded (that is, replaced with their literal values)
when a revision is checked out.
locker The person who has a revision locked is referred to as the locker.
locking Locking a member prevents more than one user from
simultaneously making changes to the same revision. When a revision is
locked, no one other than the locker can check in changes to that revision.
metadata Metadata is composed of all of the information about a revision
or archive, as opposed to the information that is part of the object. For
example, a revision’s Revision Description is metadata since it is
information about the revision, while the contents of the revision is part of
the revision itself and, hence, is not metadata.
pending member A pending member, is a member that is associated with
a pending operation that adds it to the project. The pending member is
denoted by a pending icon displayed in the Name column of the Sandbox
and Project views. The following are commands that create pending
members: Import, Add, Add From Archive, Rename To.
