NOVELS<br />

Among <strong>the</strong> most celebrated novels about ancient Greece are those by<br />

M. Renault. They include The Last <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wine (1956), The Mask <strong>of</strong><br />

Apollo (1966), The King Must Die (1958), The Bull from <strong>the</strong> Sea (1962),<br />

The Nature <strong>of</strong> Alexander (1975), and The Persian Boy (1972). Nobel prize<br />

winner William Golding’s final novel, The Double Tongue (1995), left<br />

in draft form at his death, tells <strong>the</strong> story <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last priestesses<br />

<strong>of</strong> Apollo at Delphi. Naomi Mitchison’s The Corn King and <strong>the</strong> Spring<br />

Queen (1933), which has been described as “a triumph <strong>of</strong> empathy<br />

with vanished cultures,” is set in Skythia and Sparta. Also highly<br />

recommended is Steven Pressfield’s Gates <strong>of</strong> Fire (1984), which is
