Very nearly allied to ./. excisa; but the foliage has a much more loosely<br />

cellular texture (which also keeps it distinct from -/. iucisa) and the<br />

upper leaves, which, too, are tri-quadrifid, are collected into a head at<br />

the extremity of the stem or branch.<br />

Wet bogs. Fr. Winter and Spr.—A minute species, like the preceding,<br />

with foliage of a pale delicate green, densely crowded, waved and<br />

cut, and with thickened and compressed stems. Fruit rare. Gemma co-<br />

pious, collected into little balls on the points of the leaves.<br />

Moist shady banks, especially on clay. Fr. Aut. and Spr.—This<br />

species is quite peculiar. Its short and stout stems are furnished with<br />

long purple radicles for the whole length of their underside. Leaves large<br />

in proportion to the size of the plant and closely set, spreading. Anthers,<br />

as they are called, are found naked upon the stems. <strong>The</strong> perianth is<br />

singularly large, campanulate, often cut, with 4—5 external Bubulate<br />

appendages or bracteas. <strong>The</strong> cajmde is globose, of a very thin and fragile<br />

texture, bursting irregularly and containing teed* which are densely muri-<br />

cated. Sometimes 2 or 3 capsules arise from the same calyx.<br />
