straight very fragile slimy and gelatinous forming brightgreen<br />

floating masses, articulations half as long as broad.<br />

In streams and ditches, not uncommon.—Articulations marked by a<br />

green band, often separating pnd adhering at the angles.<br />

11. C. capillaris, Linn, (capillary Conferva); filaments palegreen<br />

void of lubricity much curled and interwoven into subrigid<br />

extensive strata, articulations 3—4 times longer than<br />

broad.— C. crispa, Dillw. Syn. Conf p. 46. t. B— Prolifera<br />

crispa, Vaucher Conferva capillaris, E. Bot. t. 2364.<br />

In streams and rivulets, in many places ; forming extensive strata,<br />

many feet in diameter. In drying, the articulations are often, but not<br />

invariably, alternately compressed. It does not adhere to paper.<br />

c. filaments forming crisped, entangled strata, green—growing in<br />

the sea or in salt-water ditches.<br />

12. C. Linum, Roth, (flax-lihe Conferva); filaments thick<br />

rigid crisped forming loose extensive bundles of a dull-green<br />

colour, articulations once and a half as long as broad.<br />

In salt-water ditches, along the muddy sea-shore.—" Forming distinct,<br />

loosely interwoven, subcylindrical tufts, of a yellowish-green<br />

colour, which, in a more advanced state, changes to a dark olive :<br />

attached at one end and resting on the bottom of the pool. Filaments<br />

as thick as those of C. area, rigid, brittle and variously curved. Arti-<br />

culations filled with green matter, intermixed with large granules, irregularly<br />

contracted and compressed in drying." Carm. MSS.<br />

13. C. crdsm, Ag. (thick Conferva); filaments very thick of<br />

great length deep glossy-green much crisped rigid forming<br />

loosely entangled harsh masses, articulations as long as broad.<br />

In salt-water ditches, near the coast, in many places: very abundant<br />

in the ditches by the North Wall, Dublin, W. H. Harvey— Filaments<br />

many feet long, twice as thick as hog's bristles, remarkably rigid and fra-<br />

gile when recent ; but soon becoming flaccid on exposure to the air.<br />

14. C. tortuosa, Dillw. (twisted Conferva); filaments rigid<br />

slender much curled and twisted forming broad closely entangled<br />

strata, articulations 2—3 times longer than broad.<br />

slender capillary rather flaccid forming extensive much entangled<br />
