the same colour as the disk—Name ; *#£*£ a small shield, and<br />

edos, form ; from the small shield-like appearance of the apothecia.—From<br />

the Acharian Lecidem those species are here<br />

separated which have a distinctly scaly or imbricated thallus :<br />

as the genus stands here, it differs then from the following one<br />

solely in the nature of the apothecia.—<strong>The</strong> arrangement of the<br />

species is that of Mr. Borrer.<br />

1. L. atrdta, Wahl. ? (inky-crusted Lecidea); crust continuous<br />

even minutely tessellated of a greyish rather opaque<br />

black its fragments angular slightly concave, apothecia in the<br />

interstices half-sunk flattish coal-black with an elevated entire<br />

black border. Ach Syn. p. 11. Lichen atratus, E. Bot.<br />

t. 2335 Lecidea coracina, Ach. Syn. p. 11.<br />

Granite rocks in Glen Esk, Angus-shire.— Mr. Borrer says that the<br />

Lichen atratus of E. Bot., though named independently, is perhaps<br />

Wahlenberg's plant.<br />

2. L. atro-cinerea, (ashy-black Lecidea); crust tessellated<br />

greyish-black smooth, apothecia several together depressed<br />

brownish-black with a pale border at length crowded elevated<br />

the border being obliterated. Sm.—Lichen atro-cinereus, Dicks.<br />

Cr. Fasc. 3. p. 14. t. 2. f. 2. E. Bot. t. 2096, (excl. the synonyms<br />

?).<br />

On rocks, Mr. Dickson.—This, Mr. Borrer has not noticed in his<br />

Ms. list : but I presume it is unintentionally omitted.<br />

3. L. atro-dlba, Ach. (black and white Lecidea); crust indeterminate<br />

very thin continuous black with grey roughish convex<br />

crowded warts, apothecia in the interstices coal-black flattish<br />

at length convex with an elevated black border. Sm—Ach.<br />

Syn. p. 11. Lichen atro-albus, Linn.—E. Bot. t. 2336.<br />

Rocks in the north of England, Mr. Turner.<br />

4. L. verruculosa, Borr. Mss. (ivhite-warted Lecidea); crust<br />

indeterminate very thin fibrous black with white convex crowded<br />

smooth warts, apothecia solitary in each wart depressed coalblack<br />

with a border of the same colour. Lichen verrucidosus,<br />

E. Bot. t. 2317.<br />

5. L. fusco-dtra, Ach. (broivnish-black Lecidea); crust greyish<br />

black thin circular with a fine radiating compound inky border,<br />

apothecia sessile flattish coal-black with<br />

margin of their own substance and colour.<br />
