Brighton, Mr. Borrer.—2—4 lines high, elegantly tufted, much but distantly<br />

branched ; ramuli few, scattered; articulations slightly contracted<br />

at the joints.<br />

37. C. virgdtidum, Harv. (minute virgate Calithamnion)<br />

rose-red minute penicillately tufted, branches very straight<br />

close long virgate erecto-patent alternate, ramuli from every<br />

joint alternate or secund short obtuse, articulations thrice as<br />

long as broad.<br />

On Ceramium ruhrum , Devonshire, Mrs. Griffiths.—2—3 lines high,<br />

forming small pencil-like tufts, erect, very straight; the lower part nearly<br />

simple and naked, the upper closely set with long alternately pinnate<br />

or fasciculate branches, beset at each joint with minute, gemmaeform,<br />

i—2-jointed ramuli. Articulations coloured. Capsules minute, ellipti-<br />

cal, solitary or clustered. Habit something like that of C. Daviesii,<br />

but I trust sufficiently distinguished by the above character.<br />

minute tufted flexuose sparingly branched, ramuli short secund<br />

close spreading obtuse, articulations 4 times longer than broad.<br />

On the larger Algce, probably common. On Zostera, Appin, Capt.<br />

Carmiehacl. On Purphyra laciniata and Alaria esculenta, at Miltown<br />

Malbay, W. II. Harvey.—A line or less in height, forming minute tufts,<br />

or spreading in continuous velvety patches. Capsules solitary, or tufted,<br />

terminal on abbreviated ramuli, sessile, elliptical, dark-hrown. Lvngbye's<br />

figure entirely agrees with our plant, except in the length of the<br />

articulations.<br />

simple exceedingly minute brownish, ramuli short obtuse secund,<br />

articulations thrice as long ;ls broad pellucid in the centre.<br />

Very common on decaying Alga?, especially Ceramium rvbrum.— This<br />

is the most minute and simple of the genus.<br />

Trihe XVI. CoNFERVEJE. Pin nts (/ret //, rer// rarely pink or<br />

brown. Fructification (except in Bulboch&te) a granular<br />

coloured internal moss (called endochrome) which affect* various<br />

forms,— Fresh-water or murine.<br />
