On trees in old woods, particularly in subalpine districts. <strong>The</strong> var.<br />

/S. I have gathered on sands at Kxmouth Warren, Devon ; and I possess<br />

very fine specimens from sands by the sea- side near Malahidc,<br />

Ireland, sent me by .7. T. Mackay, Esq.— No apothecia arc described<br />

by Acharius, nor have they been ever found on British specimens. May<br />

it not be a variety of one of the preceding? or rather may not all be<br />

considered as mere forms of one species ? <strong>The</strong> same and various intermediate<br />

states are found in almost all parts of the world.<br />

Thallus cartilaginous, subfiliform, branched, prostrate or pen-<br />

dulous, somewhat fistulose and cottony within. Apothecia or-<br />

bicular, thick, sessile, plane or convex, more or less bordered,<br />

entirely formed of the thallus and of the same colour.—Name ;<br />

xMKru^oq, a mane or hair, according to Acharius, but the word<br />

will not bear such a construction, nor any that is applicable to<br />

the plant.<br />
