Banks and on heaths, particularly in sub-mountainous countries. Fr.<br />

(rare) Nov.—This fine species, with the following (except B. Tozert),<br />

form a natural groupe, (Mnium of Schwaegr. not of Sm. nor Brid.) distinguished<br />

by their large lax lurid or deep green foliage, and their barren<br />

stems which are often creeping. <strong>The</strong> inner peristome is of a firm and<br />

rigid texture. <strong>The</strong> present and the following species have perhaps the<br />

largest leaves of any British moss; and these are collected on the top<br />

of the stem where they spread out horizontally.<br />
