intermediate states occur, might easily be mistaken for a distinct species<br />

; but its characters merely result from accident or disease.<br />

all sides with long erecto-patent dichotomous penicellate ramuli,<br />

articulations 2—4 times longer than broad, receptacles lanceolate<br />

On marine rocks, rare. Pier at Torquay, Mrt. Griffiths. Wbitsand<br />

Bay, Cornwall, Mr. Arnott.— Steins tufted, 1 — 2 inches high, simple or<br />

with 3 or 4 branches, thickish, opaque, inarticulate, densely striated<br />

longitudinally, ramuli spreading on all sides, crowded towards the upper<br />

part, scattered below, 3 to 5 lines in length, articulate, several times<br />

die) itomous, the apices elongated. Lower articulations of the ramuli<br />

once or twice, upper 1 > times longer than broad; apices obtuse.<br />

Colour a fine purple. Receptacles attenuato-lanceolate, acuminate,<br />

nearly as long as the ramuli, Bessile or Bhortly pedicellate, seated in the<br />

dichotomies of the ramuli, containing dark purplish granules, closelj set<br />

in transverse fasciae. <strong>The</strong>se receptacles are abundantly produced ; the<br />
