Hedge-banks and barren wastes, frequent. Fr. March, Apr.—A mi-<br />

nute, black, muricated, fungous-like body infests the leaves of this and<br />

some other species .- of Jungemnannia " It contains about 15 oblong<br />

granules, on rather long pedicels, attached to a determinate portion of<br />

the inner surface of the Fungus, one of the hemispherical portions<br />

(after a section is made) being quite free from them." Wils.<br />

44. J. polydnthos, Linn, (many-fioioered Jungermannia); stem<br />

procumbent somewhat branched, leaves horizontal roundish<br />

quadrate plane entire and emarginate, stipules oblong bifid, fruit<br />

on short proper branches from the underside of the stem, perianth<br />

half the length of the calyptra two-lipped laciniated. Linn.<br />

Moist and very wet places, not unfrequent. Fr. March, Apr.— <strong>The</strong><br />

very square leaves and peculiar fructification will always distinguish this<br />

Parasitic on ./. Tamarisci, near Bantry, Ireland, Miss Hutchins. Fr.<br />

unknown.—This curious and exceedingly minute plant is of a dingy<br />

brown colour, and scarcely visible to the naked eye.<br />

procumbent branched, leaves horizontal plane ovate entire, stipules<br />

broadly ovate (lentato-laciniate, fruit dorsal, perianth<br />

subterraneous oblong fleshy, the mouth fimbriated with foliaceoua<br />

[n woods and rocky places, among mosses ; especially in alpine<br />

countries. Fr. Apr.— In the fleshy subterraneous perianth, and in habit<br />

too, this and the following Bpecies recede from all the other Jungermannue.<br />

Leaves of a firm texture, yellow or tawny-green.<br />
