small green and smooth above (grey when dry) irregularly<br />

lobed, beneath white downy with dark prominent reticulated<br />

veins, apothecia marginal plane dark red-brown orbicular.<br />

2. P. seuidta, Ach. (target-fruited Peltidea); thallus ashcoloured<br />

white and veiny beneath the lobes oblong rounded<br />

sinuated and cut powdery, fertile ones very short, apothecia<br />

(small) orbicular ascending dark-brown the border nearly entire.<br />

pale with numerous brown branching reticulated veins, fertile<br />

lobes short, apothecia plane horizontal transversely oblong redbrown<br />

Moist shady rocks and about the roots of trees, in mountainous<br />

4. P. aphthosa, Ach. Thrush Peltidea); thallus Light-green<br />

This is the finest British juries of the Genus: it derives its name from<br />

a circumstance related by Linnaeus, that the Swedish peasants boil it in<br />

milk as a cure lor the aphtha', or thrush, in children.<br />

5. P. canina, Ach. (canine Peltidea); thallus thick glaucousgrey<br />

greenish when moist somewhat furrowed with rounded<br />

lobefl fertile ones with the vide- relieved, beneath white with<br />

brownish branching veins and fibres, apothecia vertical revolute<br />
