On fissile slate rocks, in shady situations in the west of Ireland, Miss<br />

Hutchins.— <strong>The</strong> black apothecia burst through an irregular star-like<br />

crack in the crust and rise above the surface.<br />

tartareous cracked smooth dirty-white or brow r nish-grey, apothecia<br />

small partially emerging- somewhat conical black. Ach.<br />

18. V. Harrimdni, Ach. (Mr, Harriman s Bock Verrucaria);<br />

crust tartareous continuous limited mouse-coloured with very<br />

minute depressed dots, apothecia minute immersed globose with<br />

a prominent bordered orifice dirty white within. Sm,—Ach.<br />

On hard grey calcareous rocks, in Durham, Rev. J. Harriman.— " Its<br />

patches, though inseparable from the stone, are very distinctly limited<br />

and visibly prominent above its surface, of a hard tartareous texture,<br />

white within, greyish or pale mouse-coloured on the outside, which is<br />

thickly besprinkled with innumerable depressions or dots. <strong>The</strong> tubercles<br />

are deep sunk in the crust, blackish, their little bordered orifices only<br />

projecting slightly above its level." Sm.<br />

19. V.plumbea* Ach. (lead-coloured Roch Verrucaria); crust<br />

tartareous minutely cracked and rugged lead-coloured limited,<br />

apothecia half-immersed globose black pale within. Sm*—<br />

Limestone rocks, near Cheddar, Somersetshire, Mr. Borrer. " This<br />

species differs sufficiently from V. Harrimani , not so much in the bluer<br />

colour, as in the tessellated configuration of its crtal, which moreover is<br />

destitute of minute dots.<br />

20. V. Gdgei* Borr. (Gagean Rock Verrucaria); crust<br />

continued calcareous smooth brownish-white irregularly cracked<br />

when dry. apothecia very minute blackish sunk in the crust.<br />

Rocks of Glena and Glen Flesk, near Killarney; but not common.<br />

Sir Jas. B. Smith referred this to the Aeliarian Genus Urceolaria: but<br />

Mr. Borrer ranks it with Verrucaria*<br />

polygonal granulato-crenate scales thickish tartareous rugose<br />

greenish olive-brown, apothecia largish black partially immersed<br />
