48. Tetraspora. Link. Tetraspora.<br />

Frond tubular or- inflated, gelatinous. Fructification; minute<br />

granules, loosely arranged in fours. Ag.— Name; nr^x.four,<br />

and o-irogx] the seed; from the quaternary arrangement.<br />

1. T. lubrica, Ag. (lubricous Tetraspora); frond quite simple<br />

tubular subgelatinous waved and sinuated. Ag. Syst. Altj.<br />

lubricum, Lyngb.<br />

In gently running fresh-water. Hellesdon, Norfolk. Appin, Captain<br />

Carmichael.— This forms irregular masses of considerable extent, and<br />

is exceedingly lubricous.<br />

2. T. gclati/wsa, Desv. (gelatinous Tetraspora); frond vesicular<br />

ovate clavate very gelatinous. Ag. Syst. Alg.p. 138.— Ulva<br />

gelatinosa, Vauch. Con)', p. 244.<br />

Fresh-water stream, Mucruss, Killarney, Mr. Harvey.— Ofthia I have<br />

seen no recent specimens. It is described as resembling Frog's spawn,<br />

but of a green colour, with sporules arranged in fours.<br />

Frond tubular, hollow, membranaceous, of a green colour<br />

and reticulated structure. Fructification; three or four round-<br />

ish granules, aggregated in the reticulations. Grev. Alg. Brit,<br />

p. \78.t. 18.—Name; wrsgov, tin- entrail, and /aogpfj, a. form or<br />

appearance i from the tubular and often more or less inflated<br />

fronds.<br />
