On rocks, generally such as are perpendicular; very common.—2—<br />

inches long, forming dense ropy tufts. In drying, it adheres, but not<br />

firmly, to paper; and on being again moistened, is extremely fragile,<br />

scarcely able to sustain its own weight. Capsules 1—3 on each lateral<br />

process. Favellce generally in pairs, minute, seated on the plumules<br />

and nearly terminal.<br />

14. C. tetragomun, Ag. ([square-stalked Calithamnion); stem<br />

subsimple cartilaginous, branches patent alternate once or twice<br />

pinnate, plumules short alternate spreading pinnate below, fas-<br />

ciculate! y multifid above, apices obtuse with a mucro, articula-<br />

tions of the ramuli once and a half as long as broad, joints<br />

On the larger Laminavicc, abundant on the southern coasts of England<br />

and south and west of Ireland. Capsules excessively minute, ses-<br />

sile, elliptico-sphscrical, secund on the upper ramuli. Favellce solitary<br />

or in pairs, large.<br />

15. C. graniddtum, Ag. (warted Calithamnion); stem subsimple<br />

cartilaginous distichously branched, branches erectopatent,<br />

plumules subquadrifarious erect pinnate below, multifid<br />

and level-topped above, pinnules subulate very erect and closepressed,<br />

articulations of the ramuli twice as long as broad.-*-<br />
