Thallus cartilaginous or somewhat woody, branched and<br />

fruticulose. Apothecia turbinate, sessile, solid, plane, scarcely<br />

rising above the border, the disk at length spreading-, covering<br />

the border and reflexed.—Name; trse-ov, solid and x*«A«$, a<br />

stem, by which character it is distinguished from some other<br />

fruticulose Lichens.<br />

1. S. paschdle, Ach. (much-branched Stereocaulon)} tballus<br />

greyish branched and .rough with granulated excrescences,<br />

branches crowded and very much divided, apothecia scattered<br />

and terminal at length convex conglomerate blackish-brown.<br />

2. S. botrt/osum, Ach. (clustered Stereocaulon); tballus<br />

whitish-grey somewhat naked below above very densely branch-<br />

ed, the ultimate branchlets passing gradually into clustered<br />

granules ; apothecia collected on the fertile brandies minute darkbrown.<br />

Scotland, Afr. Borrer, who observes that it appears to be a dwarfish<br />

var. of S. paschale.<br />

3. S. condyloideum, Ach. (deformed Stereocaulon); tballus<br />

whitish nearly naked, the branches short crooked somewhat<br />

lobed knotted and granulose, apothecia on the lateral branches<br />

at length dilated flat subsessile and appressed red-brown. Ach.<br />
