Working Hours in a Day
To understand the level of exploitation that a wage labourer has to face,
we enquired into the number of hours a woman is required to work in a
day. As per the responses of the labourers, 93.50 per cent said that they
worked eight hours a day under the scheme. There are only 1.80 per cent
and 4.70 per cent who are of the view that they work for more or fewer
hours (10 or six hours, respectively). It seems that their views differ because
of their inability to estimate the actual period that they remain at
work (see Table 6.8). It can be said that so far as the working hours are
concerned, the women are working as per the rules.
Wage Paid under the EAS
Payment of wages to the labourers is an important aspect of any scheme.
It becomes all the more important in the case of the EAS, which is primarily
meant for the generation of employment for needy rural groups
during the lean agricultural season. Keeping this in mind, the respondents
were asked to state the actual wages they received per day under the scheme.
