education and marriage; only 24 per cent of women were consulted in<br />

the purchase of clothes <strong>for</strong> the family members. Greater participation is<br />

observed in villages where more women are literate.<br />

Factors Influencing Participation in Decision-Making<br />

Participation in decision-making at the household level depends on several<br />

factors. Here, the attempt is to understand if there is any relationship<br />

between property rights over land and participation. It has been hypothesised<br />

that women owning land have a greater say in decision-making<br />

vis-à-vis farm-related decisions. A positive relationship is expected between<br />

ownership of land and participation score. The other factors identified<br />

are education, occupation and age. Education is expected to have a positive<br />

impact on participation levels because educated/literate women are consulted<br />

more in decisions. Similarly, occupation is expected to have a positive<br />

influence because if the woman is working outside her home and contributing<br />

to the family income, she would be consulted more than the ones<br />

who are not contributing directly. Age is considered in order to observe<br />

whether the younger generation has better participation. The correlation<br />

between these variables is presented in Table 12.6.<br />

The results do not indicate any significant relationship between<br />

ownership of land and participation in decision-making related to<br />

agriculture. However, in the case of household-related decisions, land<br />

appears to have a negative influence, indicating that women who do not
