So, too, in the case of marketing of crops 94 per cent of women in TN<br />

Halli (Tumkur) are consulted in decision-making, but only 16 per cent of<br />

women in Huluvangala (also Tumkur) are consulted. More women were<br />

consulted in decisions relating to purchase and sale of land in all the villages<br />

except in Hunsekatte (Dharwad), where only 2 per cent of women<br />

were consulted.<br />

Participation of Women in Decisions Relating to<br />

Household Management<br />

Several decisions are to be made by poor households to maximise the<br />

returns from the limited resources they possess. Decisions regarding sending<br />

children to school or to work, marriage of the daughter, purchase of<br />

clothes, et cetera, influence the availability of resources <strong>for</strong> other purposes.<br />

But even in these matters, men have a better say compared to women.<br />

Women’s participation in these decisions is low in some of the villages<br />

(see Table 12.5). In the case of Hakki-pikki, only 16 per cent of women reported<br />

that they were consulted in decision-making about the children’s<br />
