So, too, in the case of marketing of crops 94 per cent of women in TN
Halli (Tumkur) are consulted in decision-making, but only 16 per cent of
women in Huluvangala (also Tumkur) are consulted. More women were
consulted in decisions relating to purchase and sale of land in all the villages
except in Hunsekatte (Dharwad), where only 2 per cent of women
were consulted.
Participation of Women in Decisions Relating to
Household Management
Several decisions are to be made by poor households to maximise the
returns from the limited resources they possess. Decisions regarding sending
children to school or to work, marriage of the daughter, purchase of
clothes, et cetera, influence the availability of resources for other purposes.
But even in these matters, men have a better say compared to women.
Women’s participation in these decisions is low in some of the villages
(see Table 12.5). In the case of Hakki-pikki, only 16 per cent of women reported
that they were consulted in decision-making about the children’s
