RESEARCH METHODOLOGY<br />

The major problem was how to approach women and stimulate their<br />

imagination to make them believe that with the loans available from the<br />

SHG, they could think of something else other than goats, cows and buffaloes<br />

as their assets. The area selected was Osmanabad district, which is<br />

a dryland area and figures prominently on the map of the EGS. Moreover,<br />

I was visiting the district and the rural campus of the Tata Institute of<br />

Social Sciences as part of my job. The funds allotted were very modest.<br />

Earlier, I had planned an elaborate and scientific design such as the<br />

collection of data on wasteland in nine talukas of Osmanabad district
