Species Description<br />
Short, coarse, buff-grey fur with some black hair on<br />
back. Face dark brown with buff eye ring, black or<br />
brown tail which is one-third <strong>of</strong> its body length.<br />
Species Ecology<br />
<strong>The</strong> Himalayan Marmot occurs in alpine meadows,<br />
grasslands and drylands with sparse vegetation. <strong>The</strong><br />
Himalayan Marmot mainly feeds on grasses but also<br />
includes roots, leaves and seeds in its diet.<br />
Females reach sexual maturity at approximately two<br />
years and after a gestation period <strong>of</strong> one month<br />
produce litters <strong>of</strong> two to 11 young.<br />

Rationale for assessment: This species is considered<br />
Least Concern in view <strong>of</strong> a wide distribution,<br />
presumed large population, occurrence in a number<br />
<strong>of</strong> protected areas, and because it is unlikely to<br />
be declining at a rate to qualify for a threatened<br />
category.<br />
