Species Description<br />

Grey-brown coat. Short, thick tail with a few bristles<br />

and large pink ears.<br />

Species Ecology<br />

<strong>The</strong> House Shrew occurs in and around human<br />

settlements, grasslands, scrub and forests. It feeds<br />

on grains and lives easily around human settlements.<br />

Little is known about the reproductive<br />

parameters <strong>of</strong> the species.<br />

Rationale for assessment: This species is considered<br />

Least Concern in view <strong>of</strong> its wide distribution across<br />

Species Description<br />

Grey-brown coat with black, brown and buff stripes<br />

on its back.<br />

Species Ecology<br />

<strong>The</strong> Himalayan Striped Squirrel occurs in subtropical<br />

dry deciduous forests in mountains above 700 m. It<br />

can be found in association with humans in fruit tree<br />

and coconut palm plantations.<br />

Legal <strong>Status</strong><br />

<strong>National</strong> Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 2029<br />

(1973). This species occurs within protected areas.<br />

<strong>National</strong> Population Size<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is no known information on the population<br />

size <strong>of</strong> this species but it is considered to be one <strong>of</strong><br />

the most common shrews in Nepal.<br />

<strong>National</strong> Distribution<br />

This species is widely distributed across Nepal and<br />

occurs within the protected areas <strong>of</strong> Annapurna<br />

Conservation Area, Langtang <strong>National</strong> Park, Makalu<br />

Barun <strong>National</strong> Park, Rara <strong>National</strong> Park and Shukla<br />

Phanta Wildlife Reserve.<br />

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam,<br />

Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR,<br />

Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri<br />

Lanka, Taiwan Province <strong>of</strong> China, Thailand, Viet Nam.<br />

Main Threats<br />

• Persecution and pest control.<br />
