Common Names<br />

Lama’s Pika (English); Lama Thute Kharayo (Nepali)<br />

Species Description<br />

Brown-ochre fur interdispersed with black hairs,<br />

flanks straw grey, belly slightly yellow. Ears have a<br />

small white margin and a black spot at their apex.<br />

Vibrissae are black basally and white apically. Base<br />

<strong>of</strong> all the hairs are black. Feet are yellow-ochre with<br />

black soles.<br />

Species Ecology<br />

<strong>The</strong> habitat and ecology <strong>of</strong> this species is not well<br />

known.<br />

Global: Not Evaluated<br />

<strong>National</strong>: Data Deficient<br />

Rationale for assessment: <strong>The</strong>re is insufficient<br />

information available to make an accurate<br />

assessment <strong>of</strong> the extinction risk <strong>of</strong> this species in<br />

Nepal. <strong>The</strong> taxonomy <strong>of</strong> this species is debatable as<br />

some consider this only a subspecies <strong>of</strong> Ochotona<br />

roylei.<br />

Legal <strong>Status</strong><br />

<strong>National</strong> Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 2029<br />

(1973). This species occurs within a protected area.<br />

<strong>National</strong> Distribution<br />

This species was first described in Nepal by Mitchell<br />

and Punzo (1975). It has been recorded from Lupra,<br />

Bathang and Jomsom <strong>of</strong> Mustang District.<br />

Species Description<br />

Small pikas are <strong>of</strong>ten mistaken with the more<br />

common Royle’s Pika. Pale brown-grey with an ochre<br />

tinge, head and front are a paler russet, ears slightly<br />

broader and are made conspicuous by the long hairs<br />

inside them.<br />
