Species Description<br />

Grey body above, underparts light grey with whitish<br />

hands and feet. <strong>The</strong> tail is short, and is around one<br />

third the length <strong>of</strong> head and body, foot is usually<br />

longer than the ear.<br />

Species Ecology<br />

<strong>The</strong> Ladakh Hamster occurs in coniferous and birch<br />

forests, desert steppe, shrub land and swampy<br />

highland meadows feeding on grains and insects.<br />

<strong>The</strong> species produces five to ten young per litter.<br />

Conservation <strong>Status</strong><br />

Global: Least Concern<br />

<strong>National</strong>: Data Deficient<br />

Rationale for assessment: <strong>The</strong>re is insufficient<br />

information available to make an accurate<br />

assessment <strong>of</strong> the extinction risk <strong>of</strong> this species in<br />

Nepal. Further information may qualify this species<br />

for a threatened category in view <strong>of</strong> an extent <strong>of</strong><br />

occurrence likely to be less than 20,000 km².<br />

This species occurs in the Trans-Himalayan area,<br />

Shey-Phoksundo <strong>National</strong> Park at elevations <strong>of</strong><br />

approximately 4,000 m.<br />

Distribution outside Nepal<br />

China, India.<br />

Species Description<br />

A deep, neutral grey body above with the bottom<br />

portion <strong>of</strong> the hairs brown. Underparts are dark<br />

grey. <strong>The</strong> tail is paler above than beneath, with short<br />

scattered silver hairs.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Horsefield’s Shrew occurs in tropical dry<br />

deciduous forests, subtropical montane forests and<br />

intermediate montane forests with fairly dense<br />

cover.<br />
