Species Description<br />

Pelage is short and dense with dark brown roots<br />

and lighter brown tips. Face and muzzle are hairless<br />

and dark brown-black in colour, apart from lighter<br />

coloured pinkish lips.<br />

Species Ecology<br />

Least Pipistrelle occurs in crevices in buildings and<br />

rocks and wooden structures. This is an<br />

insectivorous species.<br />

Little is known about the reproductive behaviour <strong>of</strong><br />

this species.<br />

Conservation <strong>Status</strong><br />

Global: Least Concern<br />

<strong>National</strong>: Least Concern<br />

Rationale for assessment: This species is considered<br />

Least Concern as although there is a relatively small<br />

distribution, the population is not observed to be<br />

undergoing significant decline that would qualify<br />

this species for a more threatened category.<br />

Legal status<br />

<strong>National</strong> Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 2029<br />

(1973). This species occurs within protected areas.<br />

<strong>National</strong> Population Size<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is no information available on the population<br />

size <strong>of</strong> this species in Nepal, however in South Asia<br />

this species is widely distributed and common, and<br />

the population is stable and seems to be doing well.<br />

<strong>National</strong> Distribution<br />

This species occurs within the protected areas <strong>of</strong><br />

Bardia <strong>National</strong> Park, Chitwan <strong>National</strong> Park and<br />

districts <strong>of</strong> Banke, Bara and Palpa.<br />

Distribution outside Nepal<br />

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Christmas<br />

Island, Cocos Islands, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR,<br />

Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka,<br />

Thailand, Timor-Leste, Viet Nam.<br />
