workshop in April 2010 and follows international rules <strong>of</strong> zoological nomenclature.<br />

Species Description<br />

A description <strong>of</strong> the species. Species descriptions are taken, with permission, from Baral, H.S and Shah, K.B.<br />

(2008) Wild <strong>Mammals</strong> <strong>of</strong> Nepal. Himalayan Nature, Kathmandu. With the exception <strong>of</strong> Mus phillipsi, Sorex<br />

excelsus, Myotis nipalensis, Miniopterus pusillus and Eonycteris spelaea, whose descriptions are taken from the<br />

original descriptions.<br />

A description <strong>of</strong> habitats in which the species occurs, diet and reproductive traits (when available).<br />

Conservation <strong>Status</strong><br />

Global: Global risk <strong>of</strong> extinction. Based on <strong>IUCN</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong> <strong>of</strong> Threatened Species 2010.<br />

<strong>National</strong>: Extinction risk <strong>of</strong> species in Nepal. Using the ‘<strong>IUCN</strong> Categories and Criteria: Version 3.1’ (<strong>IUCN</strong> 2001)<br />

applied at the regional level using ‘Guidelines for Application <strong>of</strong> <strong>IUCN</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong> Criteria at Regional Levels:<br />

Version 3.0’ (<strong>IUCN</strong>, 2003). Species extinction risk was assessed and confirmed in the national workshop for<br />

Nepal mammals held in April 2010. Where species are endemic to Nepal the assessment will be identical<br />

to that <strong>of</strong> the global assessment. Rationale for assessment: Rationale for the selected threat status for the<br />

species, to be read in conjunction with the criteria summary sheet.<br />
