Species Description<br />

Rufous-brown animal, pale yellow on the sides,<br />

pale brown below, brown tail, ears projecting<br />

above the fur.<br />

Species Ecology<br />

<strong>The</strong> Royle’s Mountain Vole occurs at elevations<br />

above 3,000 m in grasslands, open uplands and<br />

rocky ground covered in coarse grass.<br />

Conservation <strong>Status</strong><br />

Global: Near Threatened<br />

<strong>National</strong>: Data Deficient<br />

Rationale for assessment: <strong>The</strong>re is insufficient<br />

information available to make an accurate<br />

assessment <strong>of</strong> the extinction risk <strong>of</strong> this species in<br />

Nepal. Further information may qualify this species<br />

for a threatened category as its extent <strong>of</strong><br />

occurrence is estimated to be less than 20,000 km²<br />

and is restricted to two fragmented locations.<br />

Legal <strong>Status</strong><br />

<strong>National</strong> Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 2029<br />

(1973). This species occurs within protected areas.<br />

This species occurs within Annapurna Conservation<br />

Area and Langtang <strong>National</strong> Park.<br />
