<strong>The</strong> 2001 <strong>IUCN</strong> Categories - Definitions<br />

EX EXTINCT. A species is assessed as Extinct when there is no reasonable doubt that the last individual<br />

has died.<br />

EW EXTINCT IN THE WILD. This applies to species which only occur in captivity or as naturalised<br />

populations.<br />

RE REGIONALLY EXTINCT. A species is considered Regionally Extinct when it has disappeared from<br />

a nation or region and there is no doubt that the last individual has died there. However, such<br />

species may occur in other parts <strong>of</strong> the world.<br />

THREATENED<br />

CR CRITICALLY ENDANGERED. Species are that are Critically Endangered face an extremely<br />

high risk <strong>of</strong> extinction and fulfil the criteria A-E for Critically Endangered.<br />

EN ENDANGERED. Endangered species face a high risk <strong>of</strong> extinction and fulfil criteria A-E for<br />

Endangered.<br />

VU VULNERABLE. Species considered Vulnerable face a high risk <strong>of</strong> extinction and fulfil criteria<br />

A-E for a Vulnerable species.<br />

NT NEAR THREATENED. This category applies to species that do not currently qualify for a threatened<br />

category but is close to qualifying and is likely to qualify in the near future.<br />

LC LEAST CONCERN. Least Concern species are usually common and face no serious threats. Species in<br />

this category do not qualify for a threat category and face little or no threat <strong>of</strong> extinction.<br />

DD DATA DEFICIENT. A species is Data Deficient when there is not sufficient available information to<br />

assess the species against the criteria.
