This species was recorded for the first time in Nepal<br />

from Chitwan <strong>National</strong> Park.<br />

Species Description<br />

A large dark brown bat with a pale brown belly and<br />

throat. This species has a thick muzzle, naked except<br />

for some hair on the lip, with glandular swellings on<br />

both sides. Its ears are dark and long with six parallel<br />

ridges. Long tail with a small portion protruding<br />

beyond the membrane.<br />

Species Ecology<br />

<strong>The</strong> Serotine is found in a variety <strong>of</strong> habitats<br />

including semi-desert, temperate and subtropical<br />

dry forest, shrub land, farmland and suburban areas.<br />

This species feeds on larger beetles, moths and flies.<br />

Conservation <strong>Status</strong><br />

Global: Least Concern<br />

<strong>National</strong>: Data Deficient<br />

Rationale for assessment: <strong>The</strong>re is insufficient<br />

information available to make an accurate<br />

assessment <strong>of</strong> the extinction risk <strong>of</strong> this species in<br />

Nepal.<br />

Legal status<br />

<strong>National</strong> Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 2029<br />

(1973). This species occurs within a protected area.<br />

<strong>National</strong> Distribution<br />

<strong>The</strong> distribution range <strong>of</strong> this species in Nepal is<br />

limited to the eastern edge <strong>of</strong> Makalu Barun<br />
