Species Description<br />
Chestnut brown in colour with white underparts.<br />
Externally the brown back is the only thing that<br />
distinguishes it from other white-bellied rats (which<br />
have grey backs). Tail is slightly longer than the head<br />
and body and is covered with hairs with a paler tip.<br />
Some have spines in the fur, but guard hairs are<br />
absent.<br />
Species Ecology<br />
<strong>The</strong> Chestnut White-bellied Rat occurs in forests,<br />
grasslands, bushlands and riverbeds.<br />

Global: Least Concern<br />
<strong>National</strong>: Data Deficient<br />

available on the population size or status <strong>of</strong> this<br />
species in Nepal.<br />

(1973). This species occurs within protected areas.<br />
<strong>National</strong> Distribution<br />
This species has a small distribution occurring in<br />
Langtang <strong>National</strong> Park, Annapurna Conservation<br />
Area, Manaslu Conservation Area, and in the districts<br />
<strong>of</strong> Baglung, Gorkha, Myagdi and Parbat.<br />
Distribution outside Nepal<br />
China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Macao,<br />
Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand.<br />
Main Threats<br />
• Habitat loss and degradation.<br />
