BTE hearing aid
Rotating shaft
The hearing aid is attached to the coupler and measurement microphone and
placed on the rotating shaft inside the cavity of the chamber. The shaft itself can
be easily removed by pulling it firmly upward from the base. Two types of hearing
aid rotation shafts are provided:
• BTE Rotating Shaft: This shaft (shown in Figure 6.1.1) is nearly cylindrical
with a flatted surface on one side containing four small magnets.
A fifth magnet is located on the top of the shaft for attachment of the
Positioning Saddle that is used to hold the BTE hearing aid in place during
testing. The HA2 coupler has a steel plate that is held by the magnets
to the flatted portion of the shaft.
• ITE Rotating Shaft: This shaft contains a flat steel bar fitted with four
magnets. The matching HA-1 coupler has a flat steel plate that attaches to
these magnets.
See Section 6.3 for information on setting up the hearing aid in the 8120 Polar
Plot Sound Chamber.
The foam surrounding the cavity inside the 8120 Polar Plot Chamber is
designed to provide low levels of reflected sound over a wide band of acoustic
frequencies.
At the beginning of the test, the hearing aid is positioned so that it is pointed
towards the speaker at the back of the chamber. During the test, the shaft will
automatically rotate the hearing aid in a 360° circle counterclockwise, stopping
periodically to collect measurement data. When the test is completed, this rotation
will automatically reverse and return the hearing aid to the starting position
to prevent the microphone cord from tangling around the shaft.
