effective in eliminating all viable cells when in contact with the 48 hour or<br />

168 hour bi<strong>of</strong>ilm. In all instances the turbidity <strong>of</strong> the broth increased when<br />

incubated for an additional 24 hours (both at room temperature and 37°C)<br />

after treatment <strong>of</strong> up to 90 minutes contact time. This result is surprising<br />

consider sodium hydroxide was effective at eliminating all viable cells from<br />

the concrete surface as discussed in chapter 4. This point will also be<br />

discussed in further detail in chapter 6 where both methods are compared<br />

in greater detail. A summary <strong>of</strong> disinfectant work previously performed on<br />

established bi<strong>of</strong>ilm was also discussed in detail in chapter 4.<br />
