Fig. 5-19 A 10-year-old male Cockapoo had been salivating<br />

excessively for 3 weeks. Oral examination revealed a mass<br />

involving the left m<strong>and</strong>ibular gingiva. The open-mouth ventrodorsal<br />

view revealed a tissue-dense mass associated with the<br />

left m<strong>and</strong>ible at the level of the fourth premolar <strong>and</strong> first molar.<br />

There were areas of calcification within the mass. No evidence<br />

of bony destruction of the m<strong>and</strong>ible was noted. Differential<br />

diagnoses include epulis, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma,<br />

fibrosarcoma, <strong>and</strong> other soft-tissue tumor. Diagnosis: Epulis.<br />

dental ligament, usually appears as a soft-tissue mass that may or may not contain dystrophic<br />

calcification (Fig. 5-19). Odontoma, previously referred to as adamantinoma, a<br />

tumor arising from tooth elements, usually is cystic <strong>and</strong> appears radiographically as multiloculated<br />

radiolucent areas within the bone. Mineral densities or areas of bony proliferation<br />

may be present within the expansile lesion (Fig. 5-20).
