Public <strong>and</strong> Government Affairs<br />

Overview<br />

Media Relations<br />

Responsible for communicating SEPTA’s official position <strong>and</strong> statements on all key<br />

Authority topics, communications with consumer <strong>and</strong> trade media <strong>and</strong> the<br />

presentation of a consistent public corporate image.<br />

Government Affairs − State <strong>and</strong> Federal<br />

State − Maintain continuous contact with members of the Senate <strong>and</strong> House from the<br />

five county delegation, legislative leaders <strong>and</strong> members of relevant Committees, the<br />

Administration <strong>and</strong> appropriate staff. Review <strong>and</strong> analyze all legislation <strong>and</strong><br />

regulations introduced in both houses for potential impact on SEPTA <strong>and</strong> respond<br />

accordingly to all proposed legislation. Serve as focal point for legislative inquiries on<br />

both legislative <strong>and</strong> constituent issues. Serve as liaison with Pennsylvania Public<br />

Transportation Association (PPTA), as well as with SEPTA’s state legislative<br />

consultants. Advocate for a long-term, dedicated, inflation sensitive funding source<br />

that fully funds Act 44 of 2007.<br />

Federal − Work with the region’s Congressional Delegation <strong>and</strong> their staffs to assure<br />

that any federal legislation proposed <strong>and</strong>/or enacted is favorable to SEPTA’s<br />

interests. Respond to legislative <strong>and</strong> constituent inquiries from the federal level.<br />

Advocate for increased funding for transportation in the Federal Surface<br />

Transportation Reauthorization.<br />

Government Affairs − Region <strong>and</strong> Community Relations<br />

The Government Affairs <strong>and</strong> Community Relations staff works closely with local<br />

elected officials to advance transit-related initiatives <strong>and</strong> legislation in the five (5)<br />

county service area. Activities include attending County Council <strong>and</strong> Philadelphia<br />

City Council meetings to keep abreast of legislation <strong>and</strong> maintain a rapport with local<br />

elected officials.<br />

In addition, the Community Relations staff is proactive in its outreach in the region on<br />

SEPTA related projects <strong>and</strong> information dissemination. Responsible for responding<br />

to transit issues impacting the community on a day-to-day basis as well as<br />

participation in special events.<br />
