Operations<br />
RAIL TRANSPORTATION<br />
Principal Responsibilities<br />
Rail Transportation operates railroad <strong>and</strong> subway-elevated service throughout the five<br />
county region. Rail Transportation also includes revenue collection, station staffing <strong>and</strong><br />
cleaning.<br />
Railroad<br />
Oversees all transportation, customer service <strong>and</strong> station operation for the railroad<br />
system. The regional rail system includes 280 route miles on 13 lines or branches.<br />
Approximately 735 trains service a total of 153 stations per average weekday.<br />
Subway-Elevated<br />
Transportation – Subway-Elevated Transportation is organized into two sections:<br />
Market–Frankford Subway-Elevated (MFSE) <strong>and</strong> Broad Street Subway (BSS).<br />
The MFSE operates 370 revenue trains each weekday between the Frankford<br />
Transportation Center <strong>and</strong> the 69th Street Terminal. The BSS operates 600 revenue<br />
trains each weekday between the Fern Rock Transportation Center <strong>and</strong> AT&T Station<br />
at Pattison Avenue as well as along the Ridge Avenue Spur.<br />
Fare Collection – The fare collection group is also organized into BSS <strong>and</strong> MFSE<br />
sections. The MFSE section oversees fare sales <strong>and</strong> collections <strong>and</strong> provide service<br />
information at 28 stations. The BSS section provide these services at 25 stations.<br />
Stations – The Subway-Elevated stations group oversees the cleaning of 28 Market-<br />
Frankford Subway-Elevated stations, 25 Broad Street Subway <strong>and</strong> 8 trolley stations.<br />
VEHICLE ENGINEERING AND MAINTENANCE - AUTOMOTIVE<br />
Principal Responsibilities<br />
Oversees the engineering <strong>and</strong> maintenance for bus, trackless trolley, <strong>and</strong> non-revenue<br />
fleets. Responsible for bus <strong>and</strong> utility vehicle acquisitions <strong>and</strong> overhauls.<br />
Automotive Engineering – Provides all engineering support including specifications,<br />
drawings, vehicle modifications <strong>and</strong> system upgrades. Support is provided to heavy<br />
maintenance facilities <strong>and</strong> CCT vehicle maintenance.<br />
Utility, Brake Shop <strong>and</strong> Mechanical – Performs overhaul <strong>and</strong> heavy maintenance on<br />
bus <strong>and</strong> trackless trolley fleets. Performs maintenance on SEPTA’s non-revenue utility<br />
fleet.<br />
