2007 OSC Readiness Training Program Evaluation Report Comments on course relevance to job responsibilities • I have not yet encountered a spill where this tool would be appropriate, but I could in future. (Two responses) • We oversee oil cleanups so the course is very relevant to my job. • Our region has a burn every few years so the course is relevant to my job. Comments on course content • Excellent course. • Past and current event use was very effective. • Case studies were good but most focused on the coastal zone. • There is a good mix of science, policy, methods, case studies, and multi-media. • Course was ok. • Material was dated. (Three responses) • More emphasis on emergency response methods and less information on pre-planning. Comments on instructional methods and materials • Speakers have a lot of experience in their topic area. • Great job putting everything together. • Presenting the reference material in CD form is very helpful. • Balance was ok. • Switch order of presentations to have policy issues first, then modeling. • I suggest breaking the course into two main sections: inland/ocean spills. • Break the course up into modules. (Two responses) • More hands-on exercises would be good. • An agenda and materials relevant to the discussion would help the afternoon session. • Material could be tabbed/organized better. • Include Web site addresses in PowerPoint presentation. • Print out the PowerPoint slides as a handout for participants to take notes on. (Two responses) • Not sure all the PowerPoint slides are on the CD, such as the speakers’ presentation material. (Two responses) • Ask instructors to combine their presentation into one PowerPoint and avoid switching between many different PowerPoint presentations. (Two responses) • Too many slides of graphs and the numbers are too specific to a single site. • Handouts were not used during the class. 2007 OSC Readiness Training Program Evaluation Report • Need an additional break. (Two responses) • Might want to include a U.S. Department of the Interior representative next time. • The volume of material is high and the pace was rapid to fit in all four presentations. • While the course was informative, I think it should be a Hot Site, not a class, because the information does not lend itself to be presented in an instructive manner. Comments on course name and abstract expectations • I do not believe course met the designation of “advanced course,” as stated on abstract. • I expected more information on the planning activities with scenarios exercises. • I thought there would be more information about the operations setup, permitting, and local coordination of resources and less discussion about modeling. • The course was more complex than the abstract suggested and more interesting. • Abstract covered the course topics. • The course barely matched the abstract. Comments on recommending course to colleagues • I would recommend it to my co-workers because the course has informational value, a management perspective and technical aspects that can be put to use. • The course highlights many great points necessary in evaluating whether or not to burn. • I believe many OSCs do not know much about In-Situ Burning as a response tool and this course is a good way for them to learn about this option. (Two responses) • I suggest getting the latest information about this issue from Al Allen, Merv Fingas, and Kevin McGratten (NIST). I would also survey RRT for the most advanced ISB guidelines. • We oversee oil cleanups and others who work with me could benefit from the course.
