2007 OSC Readiness Training Program Evaluation Report
RadNET Deployables
Instructors: Dan Askren, EPA National Air and Radiation Environmental Laboratory
Michael Messer, EPA ORIA
This basic 4-hour training course focused on the use and requirements for deploying RadNET, a
nationwide environmental radiation monitoring system, during or after a radiological event. RadNET,
previously called Environmental Radiation Ambient Monitoring System, supports the Agency’s role in
assessing the impacts of a radiological incident and focuses on monitoring potential impacts on
populations and public health. “Fixed” stations routinely sample drinking water, precipitation, and milk;
and provide continuous air monitoring. “Deployable” stations may be used after an emergency to
improve air monitoring coverage over large areas.
The hands-on training covered placement, setup, operation, and disassembly of the RadNet Deployable
air monitoring units. Participants received training in the following areas:
• Overview of how and where deployables will be used during an emergency.
• Health and safety considerations for personnel deploying the monitors.
• Basics of radiation detection.
• Overview of siting and placement criteria.
The instructional methodology for this course consisted of lecture and a hands-on exercise. The target
audience for this course was RSC staff with little or no radiological experience and who are willing and
able to undertake field work.
