2007 OSC Readiness Training Program Evaluation Report • This year I was able to attend one session. It was very well set up with various presenters that had good presentation skills and information. Always learn new information. • Update on current issues of interest and concern; overview of science and approaches used to address contaminants of concern. Comments on strengthening the knowledge and skills that are essential to successful job performance General comments • Good insight into how EPA does things, received some new response ideas. • Very useful experience for me. • There is more focus on disaster response in EPA than I once imagined; our organizations are quickly melding to coordinate in such efforts. • Best way to improve performance and knowledge is by learning with peers. • I also attended some sessions outside my skills base and work area to get an appreciation of the work. I really enjoyed doing that. • I appreciate the work of the OSCs more and truly understand why they are the core to what we do. The program allowed me to strengthen the knowledge and skills that are essential to successful job performance. • Indirectly it enhanced my knowledge base pertaining to my realm (USCG). • It is impossible to spend 4 and half days in training and not strengthen your knowledge, skills, and abilities – just not necessarily “ESSENTIAL” to successful job performance. • My performance as a Regional Coordinator in OEM is improved by: increased knowledge of OSC functions and issues; meeting and discussing issues with OSCs; and hearing discussions of regional differences in implementing OEM programs. • The training was well done and will continue to help me in my job. Comments related to specific courses and topics • Contracts • Beyond the training, I believe the networking — meeting and talking with many OSCs and other regional folks — has been very helpful. • The sessions presented by OSCs were particularly informative. • More policy classes would help. • Continue to push for evidence-based scientific presentations to provide an improved foundation and understanding for OSC removal actions or exposure assessments. This is especially important for new or complex exposures such as bioagents, asbestos, etc. • Having the Russian Doctor who has been in the business directly related to bio-weapons put things into perspective. It clarified to “what extremes countries pose threats.” That helps us better prepare. • I enjoyed the ESF-10 and Planning for Disaster Courses. • More OSC Case Studies! 2007 OSC Readiness Training Program Evaluation Report • More practical hands-on with meters and applicable equipment when the specific conference unit applies. • More WMD stuff. • Risk Communications course was outstanding. • NCP course was also very good, lots of great handouts. • The Hazardous Categorization (HAZCAT) class was great. • In situ Burning (ISB) and Groundwater Intrusion was good also. Comments related to networking and building better partnerships • Interaction with OSCs. • Interaction with RSC and ties to ICS. • Keep the connections between contracting and the program. They need each other. • As a state representative, I would like to see more discussion on the framework for communication between state and federal agencies during an emergency. • As a state representative, it is very helpful for seeing OSCs from other regions and support. • Good to hear how others have solved problems in the field. • Networking is most important part of training. • The sessions that I attended were very informative. State representatives could benefit by attending such training to: collaborate with federal representatives, learn from each other’s experiences, concerns, requirements, etc. Comments on recommending others attend the readiness training program when offered again • A remarkable training opportunity overall. Well attended and well supported by all. Management support was strong and noted by many attendees. Tetra Tech did a very professional job and contributed to the program’s success. Clearly the people supporting this event are motivated and committed to making the conference the best it can be. • Also encourage OSCs to participate in presenting training courses. • As a first-time attendee, I came away with a good feeling that the OSC community knows what they are doing. This training supports that feeling. • Core classes are great, but new classes need to be cycled in. I would recommend that others attend this training program when it is offered again. • Good breadth of subject matter; Region 1 rotates OSCs through oil program, so it is nice to have oil classes available when we need to brush up on it and take other things in off years. • I am an RSC member and would recommend access to the training, either at the next program or locally, for all RSC members. • I especially enjoyed Steve Mason’s presentation on receiving an ESF mission assignment.
