This course provided information on what to do in an emergency when residents must be temporarily
relocated. The course was presented as a seminar, with a panel of experts that included OSCs who have
dealt with the issue. Participants were able to share experiences and ask questions of experienced
instructors.
The objectives of the course were to help participants understand the basics of temporary relocation
during emergency responses, recognize the complexities involved, and learn what to do and what not to
do. Among the topics addressed were:
• Making the decision — is temporary relocation a viable option at your site?
• Guiding principles from the Uniform Relocation Act.
• Overview of Superfund guidance as it relates to emergencies.
• Working with affected residents.
• The types of assistance that are available.
• Dealing with stress and disruption.
• Replacing demolished structures.
The course was designed to encourage site-specific discussions and included a case study that illustrated
common issues in implementing temporary relocation. The target audience for this course was OSCs who
may have to deal with this issue.
