2007 OSC Readiness Training Program Evaluation Report
Practical Applications of GPS
Instructors: John Bing-Canar, EPA Region 5
Brian Cooper, EPA Region 5
Patrick Hamblin, EPA Region 5
Charles Roth, EPA Region 5
This course provided OSCs practical information about GPS methods and sample design development.
The course included an overview of GPS technology, including expected accuracies and limitations of
various GPS units. GPS units and data collection software currently used by EPA were discussed,
including pocket navigation units, sub-meter accuracy and survey-grade GPS, Trimble Terrasync, and
Field Environmental Decision Support (FIELDS) RAT data recorders. Instructors also reviewed sample
design software (VSP and FIELDS) developed by EPA and provided a methodology for selecting an
appropriate sample design for removal sites and nationally significant incidents. By taking the course,
participants achieved the following objectives:
• Learned the basics of how GPS works to understand the limitations of the technology.
• Were provided with a basic understanding of spatial sample design development.
• Assessed what level of GPS accuracy is needed for GPS applications.
• Gained hands-on experience in acquiring GPS coordinates and integrating locational information
with other data (chemistry, in-field measures, and remote sensing data).
The instructional methodology for this course included lecture, case studies, and group exercises. A
hands-on, in-field practicum was emphasized in this training. The target audience for this course was
OSCs and others who plan, direct, or implement in-field sampling.
This course was recommended for RSC staff.
