2007 OSC Readiness Training Program Evaluation Report Contaminant Hydrogeology Course Instructors: Don Bussey, EPA ERT Richard Fetzer, EPA Region 3 Edward J. Gilbert, EPA ERT Gary Newhart, EPA ERT Greg Powell, EPA ERT This course focused on technical hydrogeologic issues that OSCs may have to address when they assess and address oil and hazardous material releases to the subsurface. The course provided information on the basics of ground water flow and contaminant transport, subsurface investigation methods, nonaqueous phase liquids, and vapor intrusion. By taking the course, participants achieved the following objectives: • Reviewed the fundamentals of hydrogeology. • Explored the fundamental concepts of ground water flow and contaminant fate and transport. • Discussed surface water and ground water interactions. • Discussed innovative field techniques, including direct-push technology, geophysical methods, soil gas sampling, soil and hard rock coring techniques, and investigative approaches to evaluating discrete zone bedrock contamination. • Discussed the possibility of preferential flow of contaminants in the subsurface. • Discussed the interaction between subsurface contamination and indoor air vapor intrusion. • Discussed source removal, product recovery, de-watering, and ground water treatment techniques. • Gained insight from presentations of case histories of sites that illustrate innovative subsurface investigation techniques and removal alternatives. The instructional methodology for this course included lecture, case histories, and open discussions. The target audience for this course was for OSCs interested in reviewing the basics of hydrogeology, field investigation, and removal options for subsurface contamination. The content of the course is relevant to my job responsibilities. The course had a good balance of lecture material, visual aids, case studies, and discussion time. The handout materials were clear, legible, and helpful. The course materials will be useful as a reference for my job. This course should continue to be offered at future training programs.
