Conclusion<br />

With the conclusion of the events of 1974, and the population transfers of 1975,<br />

Turkish-Cypriot policy makers would seem to have been successful beyond their<br />

wildest dreams. After some 11 years of hardship and intimidation, they had secured<br />

a fully separate and autonomous (at least from the Greeks) area in which to<br />

administer their own affairs. The area they had secured was not only some of the<br />

most productive and developed parts of the island, but also proportionally almost<br />

exactly twice their share of the island. After occupying some 2 to 3 % of the island<br />

during the enclaved period, after the summer of 1974, the 18% Turkish-Cypriot<br />

minority occupied 37% of the island; ali this behind the seemingly secure and<br />

unqualified security guarantee that had seemed so near, and yet so far, for so long.<br />

How would ali this good fortune, this politicai success be Consolidated? In the next<br />

chapter, the economie developments behind the new, far extended, and<br />

uninterrupted UN Buffer Zone will be examined. How was the transition from a<br />

war-torn, military dominated and ethnically cleansed région to a seemingly locally<br />

run and re-settled economy administered, particularly in the absence of secure<br />

property rights and international récognition?<br />
