So what did the structure of the economy, in terms of employment and income,<br />

look like after ten years of independence? The simple answer is, not much différent<br />

than it had a decade earlier. In 1970 agriculture included 4% less of the gainfully<br />

employed than in 1960, though the sector still produced under 16% of GDP<br />

(compare Figures 2.1 and 2.2 with Figures 2.5 and 2.6). Construction still<br />

exhibited signs of low productivity, 10.5% of labour producing just 7% of GDP.<br />

By 1970, manufacturing had become slightly less productive, over 13.7% of labour<br />
