When the composition of trade is dissected, the "TRNC" does appear to be a rather<br />

less typical economy: with imports accounting for an average of 80% of its<br />

international trade between 1983-92 and exports accounting for the remainder.<br />

Depending on definitions, officiai statistics may conceal an even more curious reality<br />

behind these international trade statistics. Figures 7.5 and 7.6 above reveal a fairly<br />

similar level of openness north and south; however, when trade with the respective<br />

"motherlands" (Figures 7.9 and 7.10) is deducted, the story looks very different<br />

(Figures 7.11 and 7.12).<br />
