4.2.1 Wizards<br />

A common type <strong>of</strong> design tool found on the web is a guided, interactive program that<br />

incorporates relevant guideline information and steps the user through a process to arrive at<br />

a problem solution. S<strong>of</strong>tware wizards would fall into this general category.<br />

A simple example <strong>of</strong> such a tool can be found on the website <strong>of</strong> PPG Industries (2008). PPG<br />

is a large producer <strong>of</strong> glass and glazing products. Their website provides considerable<br />

resources to designers in the form <strong>of</strong> technical bulletins, design guidelines and tools. One <strong>of</strong><br />

the tools is called the “Interactive Glass Product Selector,” which is accessed through a link<br />

on the main glass resource webpage. The tool is intended to facilitate the glass selection<br />

process (Figure 4.1 - Figure 4.4).<br />

The user is first directed to make a selection from the “exterior color” box first. Clicking in the box<br />

reveals the drop down menu.<br />
