4.4 Reference Materials<br />

The most basic learning resource is the body <strong>of</strong> existing information related to a subject. The<br />

material can be in the form <strong>of</strong> books, journals, technical papers, brochures, magazines,<br />

newspapers, thesis and dissertations, and in the many forms <strong>of</strong> digital media, and be found<br />

for purchase from various sources, in libraries, in broadcast media, and on internet websites.<br />

The internet has done much to make such sources <strong>of</strong> information available, but accessibility<br />

is <strong>of</strong>ten challenged by the volume <strong>of</strong> material available on the web. The information relating<br />

to a particular subject is not necessarily to be found in a single, centralized easily accessed<br />

location. Mature subject matter and technology is far more likely to be easily accessible, with<br />

organized, comprehensive industry websites. This is typically far less true <strong>of</strong> new and<br />

emergent technology that may be largely uncategorized and unrecognized as a discrete<br />

subject matter.<br />

4.4.1 Case Studies<br />

This is a classic and heavily utilized reference format in the building arts. Case studies can<br />

provide significant value to the user by documenting projects in a manner that presents<br />

experience based upon completed works. The content can include various aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

concept, building form, programmatic content, structural design, a unique building form or<br />

technology, materials and processes, and detail design. Examples <strong>of</strong> case study subject<br />

matter may include:<br />
