Structural Efficiency (strength to weight): High structural efficiency <strong>of</strong> the cable net is <strong>of</strong>fset<br />

by the requirements for boundary supporting structure. The shape <strong>of</strong> the anticlastic nets<br />

adds significantly to the structural efficiency.<br />

Seismic behavior: With deflection criteria in the L/50 range, these structures are designed to<br />

move. Lateral loading capacity is high so as to accommodated wind loads. In plane<br />

movement is taken up in the large silicone butt-joints.<br />

Behavior under extreme loading conditions: This class <strong>of</strong> structures benefits from its high<br />

flexibility under impact and blast loading.<br />

Constructability<br />

Fabrication: Fabrication requirements are minimal and easily accommodated. Care must be<br />

taken in the specification <strong>of</strong> cast components to assure quality. Stainless steel material<br />

specifications must be carefully selected; similarly with coatings if steel products are used.<br />

Installation: The definition <strong>of</strong> an installation method statement is important. It should address<br />

both net assembly and installation. The nets must be installed to a high tolerance to assure<br />

glass fit-up. Accurate survey information is critical. The nets can be assembled in place or<br />

remotely, transported to the site, and installed as an assembly. If the latter strategy is used,<br />

great care must be taken in handling and transporting the net so as not to damage the<br />

cables or clamps. Both flat and anticlastic cable nets will require pre-tensioning during<br />

installation, a critical function that requires proper technique, and <strong>of</strong>ten involves the use <strong>of</strong><br />

hydraulic jacking systems to perform the pre-tensioning, and the use <strong>of</strong> tension measuring<br />

devices to assure that the specified prestress values are met.<br />
